New Apprenticeship Scheme

Young people from Whitchurch will have the opportunity to apply for three new apprenticeships on offer at storage and distribution company Grocontinental, the town’s largest employer.

Open to students between the ages of 16 and 23, the new roles available will be in business administration, warehousing and IT. The scheme was launched at a special workshop held at school where members of staff from Grocontinental chatted to students about the benefits of the apprenticeship scheme and the positions on offer.

Former Sir John Talbot’s student, Oliver Saywell of Whitchurch, who joined the company as an apprentice and now works as an IT Systems Technician, said: ‘I left school at 16, following the completion of my GSCEs, and then joined college. Soon after starting, I realised that college wasn’t for me and that I wished to pursue a career whilst working towards a qualification. Grocontinental offered me a structured apprenticeship programme which they supported me through every step of the way. Apprenticeships open many different doors and combine a qualification and practical experience. There’s also the bonus of being paid.’
