At Sir John Talbot’s School, our ethos “achievement through caring” embodies the holistic approach we take to supporting students, so that they may achieve in all aspects of their development. We aim to enhance their life chances for the future by providing tailored support throughout their time in school.
We endeavour to ensure that students and parents have access to independent advice and guidance (IAG), whenever required, to assist with making important academic or career decisions, as well as offering emotional or medical advice if needed.

Sir John Talbot’s School needs your help to bridge the gap between education and employment
Sir John Talbot’s School wants to connect with employers and careers programme providers to work together to create meaningful encounters with the world of work for our students. Data shows that a young person who has four or more encounters with an employer is 86% less likely to be unemployed or not in education or training and can go on to earn up to 18% more during their career.
Our goals
- Provide at least four employer and workplace encounters for our students
- Ensure these encounters start in Year 7
- Work with employers to guide strategic careers planning for the good of the local community whilst benefitting Sir John Talbot’s students (mentoring, enterprise competitions and work-related learning
- Embed in the curriculum and celebrate an ethos that places careers and enterprise opportunities at the heart of Sir John Talbot’s School

Teachers
Teaching careers as part of the curriculum has a dual purpose:
- To provide careers education as part of the school’s careers and enterprise provision
- To enhance the whole curriculum with the addition of career-relevant content
It is expected that all staff embed careers learning into the curriculum. The careers team can provide help and support by providing resources and subject specific guidance.
Students
What to expect from a career guidance interview?
A careers guidance interview is an impartial, one-to-one meeting between yourself and a professionally qualified Careers Adviser (Level 6 Diploma in Careers Guidance & Development). A guidance interview can last up to 45 minutes. A careers guidance interview is not like a job interview – there are no right or wrong answers.

Sir John Talbot’s School Careers Fest
Sir John Talbot’s School’s Careers Festival took place in school on Wednesday 18th October 2023 and was once again a huge success. We welcomed over 40 local employers and Further Education (FE) providers to support our students preparing for future destinations.
