Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives underway

All school’s across The Marches Academy Trust are working on embedding a culture of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB). In our school, initiatives are underway to help support this – here’s an update from Miss Webb:

“January 2023 saw the launch of a new and exciting lunchtime club at SJT, advertised to students with the tag-line ‘No outsiders, everyone welcome’. The students quickly took ownership of their newly formed group and branded themselves the Anti-Discrimination Club; ADC for short. ADC provides a safe and welcoming place for students to mix with likeminded individuals who are passionate about promoting equality and tackling discrimination. ADC have been very busy! During their first few weeks they got to know each other by sharing pronouns and discussed how our school is getting equality right and what students felt were areas that needed improving. With February being #LGBTQHistoryMonth it was agreed this would be the first focus. Students rose to the challenge of marking LGBTQ+ History month with a variety of projects: a new display board showcasing LGBTQ+ History month; working with our librarian to improve the collection of books which feature LGBTQ+ themes/characters and these are now marked with a rainbow sticker. All students have taken part in two form time sessions using resources planned by the group; and all teachers were asked to display the rainbow logo in their lessons throughout February and make reference to a person from the LGBTQ+ community and their contributions to their subject. Other actions from ADC include meeting with Mrs Errington, Subject Lead – History, to discuss how they can decolonise the History curriculum and marking #InternationalWomensDay.”

Take a look at student feedback:
“I’ve come to ADC to try and provide support to other people, because my friends really supported me when I came out and I’d like to provide that to others.”
