Sixth Formers are inspired at informative careers awareness event

An inaugural, joint event between The Grove School and Sir John Talbots School Sixth Form, both part of The Marches Academy Trust, took place last Thursday. The Careers Awareness event marked the start of our increased focus on post-18 options. The idea of the event was to broaden careers awareness, showing the breadth of jobs available in a range of areas. Many of the speakers debunked myths that taking a particular degree or apprenticeship route narrows career options.

The day started with a Carly Outteridge from Staffordshire University who talked about careers versus jobs and how to go about research. Then Anna Garland inspired students to think about the huge range of careers that might follow policing, law and criminology degrees. Global technology company Capgemini based their sessions around personal career journeys and their degree apprenticeships in technology and business. Richard Steele from LLS also talked about having multiple lines of experience which brought him to his current role. Students were exposed to the idea that you do not have to be a sports fan or athlete to work in this significant industry.

The two heads of Sixth Form then led sessions on the practicalities of apprenticeship and university applications to start the exciting process for real with Unifrog research, timelines and early entry preparation amongst the topics.
